RugGear RG540: 5G Push-to-Talk for Mission-Critical Operations
The RG540 is RugGear's first 5G rugged smartphone, engineered for organisations that depend on reliable voice, video and data in demanding field conditions. It is designed to serve as a genuine radio replacement rather than a consumer handset with a push-to-talk application installed.
Mission-critical push-to-talk
The RG540 supports MCX (mission-critical push-to-talk) and MC Video in line with 3GPP Release 15, with dedicated PTT and SOS buttons that remain operable while wearing gloves. Bearer-level quality of service ensures push-to-talk traffic retains network priority during periods of congestion, which is the key distinction between a consumer device running a PTT app and a purpose-built mission-critical terminal.
5G connectivity across public and private networks
The Qualcomm QCM6490 octa-core 2.7 GHz platform delivers 5G standalone and non-standalone operation with carrier aggregation and EN-DC, alongside VoNR, VoLTE, Vi-LTE and VoWiFi. Support for eMBMS group broadcast and the CBRS spectrum allows the device to operate equally well on a public carrier network or on a private LTE network deployed across a mine site, port or processing plant.
Rugged construction
The RG540 is sealed to IP68 against dust and water immersion and has been tested to MIL-STD-810H. The 6.0" FHD display is protected by third-generation Corning Gorilla Glass and supports wet-hand and gloved operation. A 2 W loudspeaker rated above 103 dB, paired with dual-microphone noise reduction, maintains intelligibility around heavy machinery and traffic noise.
Full-shift power
The 4400 mAh battery is user-removable, allowing a spare to be swapped mid-shift rather than withdrawing the device from service. Charging is via USB-C 3.1 or the optional desktop charger.
A capable field device
The RG540 runs Android 12 with Google Mobile Services, including support for security patches and major version upgrades. Specifications include 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage expandable to 512 GB, a 48 MP PDAF rear camera for remote maintenance video and evidence capture, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6 with seamless roaming. Lone Worker Protection is preloaded. The 16-pin side interface accepts a wired PTT headset or remote speaker microphone, while Bluetooth 5.2 supports the wireless RSM.
Recommended applications
Mining and resources, tunnelling and civil construction, warehousing and logistics, utilities and energy, airports and aviation ground handling, security services, and public safety and emergency response.
